CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

“You’ve found the remaining suspects?” Agent Carrow asked, sounding impressed.

Jay bit his tongue and marched the rest of the way from the door to the office to Agent Carrow’s desk. He had woken late that morning after a very long night, only to discover that Peters was not in the house. Before his curiosity had quite turned to panic, Darrel had sent them a message. Gary was breaking ranks. He had not only taken it upon himself to go off and deliver a report to Agent Carrow alone and before running it by the others, but had also sent an encrypted email out. Darrel was tracking the email now, but that didn’t help this situation with Agent Carrow.

Jay had arrived to hear Gary finishing off his little speech about his checks into the taxi drivers.

“How come you’re only getting here now, Mr. Roe?”

“Because I didn’t know Gary was coming here to…”

“Like I have to tell you everything.”

“…make a fool of himself,” Jay finished as Gary colored.

“But you can’t have all the glory all the time.”

Jay gave the man an exasperated stare.

“You wouldn’t have let Mr. Peters deliver this news?” Agent Carrow interrupted the glaring.

“Of course not. His report is, mostly, a bunch of unusable rubbish.”

Agent Carrow raised an eyebrow and shushed Gary as he made to protest. “You were not here for his report, so how do you know?”

“Because everything Gary was doing yesterday was being double-checked by Keira and me. From what you said as I came in, he is claiming to have identified both the missing parties from that meeting.”

“And you disagree?”

“Yes,” Jay said nodding, “Keira is still working on the final leg of investigation, but I think we may have gotten one other. The rest are duds. People who live or work in the area, or who can be tracked as having legitimate business there, by appointment, at the time of the meeting. Appointments that were attended.”

Agent Carrow shifted his gaze to Gary. “Did you really come here without checking in with Mr. Roe first?”

Gary muttered something about unfair treatment but nodded.

Agent Carrow moved around his desk to stand not a pace away from Gary. Jay found himself glad that he was not on the other side of the glare now being directed at Gary. How many new agents had trembled and shattered under that gaze?

“Jayden Roe, for all his faults, is leading this investigation. Do you have such little understanding of hierarchy that I need to explain that to you?”

Gary looked down at his shoes. “No. I just… He was still asleep and I thought you should know this straight away. This investigation is time-sensitive, right?”

Jay resisted the urge to roll his eyes and hid a smile as Carrow rolled his own. Any further reprimand was cut short as Darrel stepped in the glass room.

“Time is shorter than you know,” he told Gary then turned his gaze. “You better see this, boss.”

Darrel stepped around the desk. He flipped the screen so they could all see, and plugged in his USB, fingers flashing across the keys with practiced ease.
